The trail journeys field guide
Twelve journeys through Bryce’s mapped trails, broad relief and landscape stories.
Source check: October 2, 2026. This is a dated learning guide, not navigation or current trail guidance. Check NPS conditions before a trip. Maps cannot establish current opening, safety, accessibility or water availability.
Follow the rim through forest, then descend into a long circuit of fins and hoodoos. The return climb is part of the story.
Mapped loop from Fairyland Point. The Tower Bridge spur is a separate optional variant; parking approach is not included.
Square: mapped start. Numbers: learning stops. Map is north-up. Profile elevations use NAVD88 metres; its vertical scale is independent of the map.

Counterclockwise from Fairyland Point (NPS recommendation)
NPS lists 8.0 mi / 12.9 km in its main details and 7.8 mi / 12.6 km in accessibility details. Both differ from this generalized mapped line. Spur inclusion is not explicit in the published total.
Fairyland Point has no park shuttle stop. Check NPS access and conditions before planning a return.
Forest on the plateau and the amphitheater below belong to the same walk. Notice how the trail follows the edge before leaving it.

A landscape of fins and columns
NPS describes frost weathering and erosion as central to Bryce’s sculpted rock. A hoodoo is a remaining column; this relief model cannot resolve every fin, opening or overhang.

Include Tower Bridge spur
Adds the same documented spur once outward and once back. NPS does not clearly state whether its published 8.0 miles includes this side trip.
An out-and-back journey from Sunrise Point to the Queen Victoria viewing spur. Read the return half of the profile before you begin.
Sunrise trail junction to the mapped Queen Victoria viewing spur and back. The viewpoint and the hoodoo are different locations.
Square: mapped start. Numbers: learning stops. Map is north-up. Profile elevations use NAVD88 metres; its vertical scale is independent of the map.
NPS published: 1.8 mi / 2.9 km · 450 ft / 137 m ascent Moderate · 1–2 hours
Mapped study: 2.26 km · derived ascent 130 m Out-and-back
Descend from Sunrise Point; return on the same path
This mapped line is materially shorter than NPS’s 1.8 mi / 2.9 km hike. The compilation may generalize switchbacks or use different endpoints. No extra distance is invented to match NPS.
This is a descent into the amphitheater followed by an uphill return. A low calculated ascent does not establish effort or accessibility.
The Queen’s Garden is a route into the amphitheater, not a rim stroll. The downhill beginning becomes the uphill finish.

Why columns survive
Differences in rock resistance help produce the uneven shapes called hoodoos. Look at the variety of silhouettes; the terrain’s broad slopes do not reproduce their delicate surfaces.

Queen Victoria viewing spur
The named hoodoo is viewed from a short spur. The marker belongs to the viewpoint; it does not invite a climb onto the formation.

Two trails joined by a walk along the rim
Queen’s Garden / Navajo
Descend Queen’s Garden, take the viewing spur, climb the Two Bridges side of Navajo, then follow the Rim Trail back to Sunrise.
Two Bridges variant, including the Queen Victoria spur. Wall Street is not part of this line. Rim Trail completes the loop.
Square: mapped start. Numbers: learning stops. Map is north-up. Profile elevations use NAVD88 metres; its vertical scale is independent of the map.
NPS published: 2.9 mi / 4.6 km · 625 ft / 191 m ascent Moderate · 2–3 hours
Mapped study: 4.08 km · derived ascent 191 m Loop + retraced section
The published NPS loop distance is approximate and can describe either Navajo side. This packet fixes Two Bridges and includes the short Queen Victoria detour. The dated line compilation yields a different distance.
NPS recommends descending Queen’s Garden and ascending Navajo. Check current restrictions; the preview does not certify that Two Bridges is open.
The viewing spur returns to the same junction before the journey continues toward Navajo. It is counted twice only because you walk it twice.
1.13 km along the displayed study · Near an NPS mapped point (6.7 m offset). Projected route position near the NPS viewing point; no line is drawn onto the hoodoo.Queen S Garden Trail
Climbing Two Bridges
This side of Navajo supplies the ascent back to Sunset Point. NPS recommends this general direction for the combination hike.

Close the loop on the rim
Sunset and Sunrise are separate viewpoints. The mapped Rim Trail joins them; overlooking this last part would leave an incomplete loop.

NPS published: 1.3 mi / 2.1 km · 515 ft / 157 m ascent Moderate · 1–2 hours
Mapped study: 2.24 km · derived ascent 156 m Loop + retraced section
Counterclockwise: down Wall Street, up Two Bridges (NPS recommendation)
NPS’s dedicated page gives 1.3 mi / 2.1 km; the hiking index gives 2.2 km. These are published approximations. The derived profile samples ground beside narrow walls and cannot represent tunnels or tread precisely.
Wall Street has a regular winter closure. A loop line on this page is not an opening report.
Both sides share this short approach from Sunset Point. The full itinerary includes the approach and return, while the map draws the same ground once.

Wall Street’s narrow walls
NPS describes narrow limestone walls and Douglas-fir trees along Navajo. The gridded bare-earth relief is a broad landscape model, not a walk inside the slot.
This side connects the lower junction and Sunset Point. Natural openings are three-dimensional features: an elevation grid cannot recover their undersides.
Retraces Two Bridges from the lower junction. This has a different distance from the published full-loop total; it does not imply current winter access.
Reach the loop from Bryce Point, circle through the amphitheater, and retrace the connector. The approach is part of the hike.
Mapped trailhead near Bryce Point to the loop and back. The overlook and parking are separate arrival/context points.
Square: mapped start. Numbers: learning stops. Map is north-up. Profile elevations use NAVD88 metres; its vertical scale is independent of the map.
NPS published: 5.5 mi / 8.9 km · 1,560 ft / 474 m ascent Strenuous · 3–4 hours
Mapped study: 7.47 km · derived ascent 448 m Loop + retraced section
Clockwise on the loop, with Bryce Point connector in both directions
The UGRC line is shorter than NPS’s 5.5 mi / 8.9 km. NPS’s general index uses 8.8 km and says clockwise required; the dedicated page says recommended. This study always uses clockwise and keeps that wording conflict in the audit.
Horses and mules may share this trail. NPS directs hikers to yield to riders. Confirm current guidance before hiking.
This junction separates the two-way approach from the circular part of the journey. Returning to Bryce Point means climbing that connector again.

Windows in the rock
NPS identifies Peekaboo as a place to see natural windows, including the Wall of Windows. This marker is a reading cue on the loop, not a surveyed viewing station for a particular opening.

A side trail with a destination of its own
Tower Bridge
Use the southern part of Fairyland, follow the documented viewing spur, and return to the trailhead north of Sunrise Point.
Begins at the mapped Tower Bridge trailhead north of Sunrise. Parking-to-trailhead access is not part of this route.
Square: mapped start. Numbers: learning stops. Map is north-up. Profile elevations use NAVD88 metres; its vertical scale is independent of the map.

Out to the viewpoint, then back along the same segments
The named activity uses Fairyland’s southern segment plus the Tower Bridge spur. It is not the full Fairyland loop, and its return is counted explicitly.
The Sunrise arrival point is a transfer destination, not the Tower Bridge trailhead or the bridge formation.
The first part is also part of Fairyland Loop. A trail segment can serve more than one named hike without becoming a new path.

NPS published: 4.0 mi / 6.4 km · 1,380 ft / 421 m ascent Strenuous · 3–4 hours
Mapped study: 6.54 km · derived ascent 355 m Out-and-back
Down from Bryce Point; uphill return on the same path
NPS’s dedicated hike page gives 1,380 ft ascent; an older Peekaboo/Hat Shop wayside describes a 1,000 ft descent. The dedicated hike total is retained without forcing the DEM profile to match.
This is an out-and-back from the rim; the climb is on the way home. NPS discourages unprepared winter use.
The trailhead serves several activities. Under-the-Rim continues far beyond this day hike; the Hat Shop study has a specific turnaround.

Sheep Creek connector first; return by Swamp Canyon connector
The two connectors have different names in NPS and UGRC records. Exact source IDs, direction and junction checks are retained so the loop can be audited independently.
NPS describes this as more rugged, more forested and less signed than the amphitheater trails. Carry current park mapping.
NPS contrasts this sheltered view with Bryce’s larger overlooks. A modest view from the rim can still lead to a substantial backcountry walk.

Mapped loop from the forest junction southeast of Rainbow Point
NPS main details give 1.0 mi / 1.6 km; its accessibility block pairs 1.0 mi with 0.8 km. This atlas retains the main details and flags the inconsistent conversion. The omitted trailhead approach partly explains the mapped total.
A short trail at high elevation is not automatically an accessible or currently passable trail. Check snow and road access.

From the Yovimpa trail junction down the western side, returning by the eastern side
The 2021 NPS page pairs 8.5 mi with 14.2 km (8.5 mi converts to about 13.7 km). Both printed values are preserved as published, not silently corrected. Ascent is the page’s climbing total, not just its min-to-max difference.
Backcountry water and trail conditions need current NPS advice. A spring label does not guarantee water availability or potability.
NPS describes a steeper, more heavily forested western side and more open cliff breaks on the east. Reading the whole profile helps make the return climb visible.
