Eight original botanical plates

Look closer, at your own pace.

Every plate contains specimen, flower, leaf and structure views. Open a vector plate to enlarge it without loss of line detail. The text below each image carries the same identifying traits.

Educational illustrations, not measured specimens or identification keys. The composed meadow does not claim these plants occur together. No bloom schedule, specimen scale or precise plant location is supplied.

Blue flax

Linum lewisii

Blue flax: Five blue petals spread from a small, pale center. Individual flowers can also be much paler. Short, narrow leaves attach one at a time at different heights along the stem.

Flower. Five blue petals spread from a small, pale center. Individual flowers can also be much paler.

Leaf. Short, narrow leaves attach one at a time at different heights along the stem.

Structure. Count the five outlined petal blades around one center. Compare them with the joined corolla tube of scarlet gilia.

Drawing limit. Petal folds and vein strokes are illustrative; no measured surface or color sample.

Western wallflower

Erysimum capitatum var. purshii

Western wallflower: Four yellow-to-orange petals form each flower in a clustered flowering head. Leaves attach alternately along the upright stem. Their drawn outline is simplified.

Flower. Four yellow-to-orange petals form each flower in a clustered flowering head.

Leaf. Leaves attach alternately along the upright stem. Their drawn outline is simplified.

Structure. Count four petals around one center. A cluster contains several flowers, each repeating that four-part plan.

Drawing limit. Cluster size, branching and leaf outlines are composed for clarity, not measured from a specimen.

Bush cinquefoil

Dasiphora fruticosa subsp. floribunda

Bush cinquefoil: Five yellow petals surround a crowded center on this flowering shrub. One compound leaf divides into five or seven narrow leaflets. Five are shown on each drawn leaf.

Flower. Five yellow petals surround a crowded center on this flowering shrub.

Leaf. One compound leaf divides into five or seven narrow leaflets. Five are shown on each drawn leaf.

Structure. Trace the shared leaf axis: the small blades are leaflets of one compound leaf, not five separate leaves.

Drawing limit. This is a flowering branch of a shrub, not its full growth habit. Leaflet spacing is expanded for legibility.

Lavenderleaf sundrop

Calylophus lavandulifolius

Lavenderleaf sundrop: Four broad yellow petals open above a long, slender floral tube; eight stamens are shown at the center. Narrow gray-green leaves attach alternately. Fine hairs cover both leaves and stems.

Flower. Four broad yellow petals open above a long, slender floral tube; eight stamens are shown at the center.

Leaf. Narrow gray-green leaves attach alternately. Fine hairs cover both leaves and stems.

Structure. The striped bud and the long tube below the open flower are separate from the four petal blades.

Drawing limit. NPS and Arizona Extension disagree on time of opening; no daily or seasonal bloom schedule is asserted.

Showy rushpink

Lygodesmia grandiflora

Showy rushpink: The pink-to-bluish flower head has 6–15 rays. This illustration chooses ten within that reported range. Thin stems carry narrow leaves, with larger leaves toward the plant’s base.

Flower. The pink-to-bluish flower head has 6–15 rays. This illustration chooses ten within that reported range.

Leaf. Thin stems carry narrow leaves, with larger leaves toward the plant’s base.

Structure. Each straplike ray belongs to a floret in a shared head. The ten drawn rays are not ten petals of one flower.

Drawing limit. Ten ray florets are an illustrative choice. Toothed ray tips and fine center strokes are schematic.

Pineywoods geranium

Geranium caespitosum

Pineywoods geranium: Five pink-to-purple petals carry darker veins. Five pointed sepals sit between and behind them. A single broad leaf has deep, toothed lobes spreading from its base like fingers.

Flower. Five pink-to-purple petals carry darker veins. Five pointed sepals sit between and behind them.

Leaf. A single broad leaf has deep, toothed lobes spreading from its base like fingers.

Structure. Compare a lobe with a leaflet: the geranium’s lobes remain parts of one blade. Ten stamens are drawn in the flower.

Drawing limit. The face view flattens the natural backward bend of the petals. Vein paths and surface hairs are stylized.

Markagunt penstemon

Penstemon leiophyllus

Markagunt penstemon: A blue-violet corolla widens from a tube, marked with darker red-violet lines. Stem leaves occur in pairs. Lower leaves are broader toward the tip; upper leaves are narrower.

Flower. A blue-violet corolla widens from a tube, marked with darker red-violet lines.

Leaf. Stem leaves occur in pairs. Lower leaves are broader toward the tip; upper leaves are narrower.

Structure. Count two lobes above the mouth and three below. All five belong to the same joined corolla.

Drawing limit. Two-plus-three lobe layout is a genus-level reference. The illustration omits internal reproductive anatomy.

Scarlet gilia

Ipomopsis aggregata

Scarlet gilia: Five spreading lobes open from a long, narrow corolla tube. Red is shown; pink and white also occur. The bright green foliage is deeply divided into fine, comb-like segments.

Flower. Five spreading lobes open from a long, narrow corolla tube. Red is shown; pink and white also occur.

Leaf. The bright green foliage is deeply divided into fine, comb-like segments.

Structure. Follow the continuous tube to its five tips. These are corolla lobes, unlike the separate petals of flax.

Drawing limit. Tube curvature and branch placement are illustrative. No pollination simulation is included.

Sources & drawing limits

All media in this pack are original vectors. Source photographs and published botanical illustrations were not copied or traced. The NPS index supports park occurrence; supporting university and herbarium descriptions supply missing morphology, not additional Bryce occurrence evidence.

NPS and Arizona Extension disagree on sundrop opening time; no time-of-day claim is used. NPS’s penstemon and paintbrush prose uses an older family grouping; the displayed headings and Flora of North America support Plantaginaceae and Orobanchaceae. The milkweed family is omitted rather than silently changing the NPS taxonomy. Names follow the park accounts; this is not a taxonomic revision.

Eight complete models meet this edition’s illustration scope. Yarrow, showy milkweed, western iris and Wyoming paintbrush have researched text records only. Independent botanical review and physical-device/screen-reader qualification remain outside this local candidate.
