SOURCE NOTES / 02 OCTOBER 2026
A drawing starts a question.
Every diagram and observation prompt in this collection was created for BCC. All diagrams are illustrative, not measured or reconstructed from a real landmark. No photograph, source diagram, terrain, personal record or Google imagery is included.
The sources below were checked on October 2, 2026. They support general teaching context, not today's park conditions. Follow current official notices and forecasts before going outdoors.
This is an independent BCC learning resource. It is not an official National Park Service program, Junior Ranger activity, badge or endorsement. Our activities are editorial suggestions, not a validated curriculum or scientific survey.
FN-NPS-HOODOOS
Hoodoos
National Park Service, Bryce Canyon
Supports: Weathering breaks rock down; erosion moves it. Water freezing in cracks can contribute to rock breakdown. Rock formation and present landform shape have different histories.
Limit: No annual freeze count, rate, age estimate or measured geometry is used.
FN-NPS-FINS
Wall and Narrows
National Park Service, Bryce Canyon
Supports: Fins, openings and pillars are useful forms to compare; runoff can remove broken material.
Limit: The page contains simplified chronology and seasonal statements; these are not repeated. Drawings are not a dated sequence or a mapped location.
FN-NPS-PLANTS
Plants
National Park Service, Bryce Canyon
Supports: Bryce has varied plant communities across forests, open slopes and meadows.
Limit: No site-specific occurrence, rare-species location, species identification, cause of growth or age is inferred.
FN-NPS-HIKING
Hiking
National Park Service, Bryce Canyon
Supports: Use designated trails, leave natural objects in place, avoid feeding or approaching wildlife, and consult current conditions.
Limit: This notebook provides no current trail status, route instructions or permission to leave a trail.
FN-NPS-SAFETY
Your Safety
National Park Service, Bryce Canyon
Supports: Observe away from cliff edges, do not climb crumbly rock or loose slopes, and seek shelter when thunder is heard.
Limit: A short activity is not a trip-safety assessment; official conditions and instructions remain controlling.
FN-NASA-SHADOWS
Sun As a Star: What Can We Learn About the Sun From Shadows?
NASA
Supports: Observe shadow direction and length over time without looking directly at the Sun.
Limit: No Sun viewing, sundial calibration, geographic direction, time estimate, or height measurement is requested. The original NASA activity and artwork are not copied.
FN-NOAA-CLOUDS
The Four Core Types of Clouds
NOAA JetStream
Supports: Clouds can be described by broad wispy, puffy and layered forms.
Limit: The notebook uses shape words, not a cloud-height estimate or a forecast. Not all cloud types are depicted.
FN-NWS-LIGHTNING
Lightning Safety
NOAA National Weather Service
Supports: No outdoor location is safe during a nearby thunderstorm; thunder means stop the activity and seek safe shelter.
Limit: A quiet sky, absent thunder, or a particular cloud shape is not an all-clear signal.
FN-NPS-SOUNDS
Exploring Sound
National Park Service, Natural Sounds
Supports: Listening can build awareness of natural and human sounds; quieter behavior supports other visitors and wildlife.
Limit: No recording, identification from a sound alone, sound-level measurement or wildlife call playback is requested.
Original artwork and reuse
The SVG diagrams, page layouts and prose are original BCC project assets. No third-party media has been copied. Factual links do not transfer the rights to photographs or other materials on those sites. No new public license is asserted for this unpublished candidate.
The demo uses the existing locally hosted Inter and Gelasio fonts; their OFL notices remain in the website's fonts directory. The standalone print pages use system fonts.
